What the Swiss Investor Map contains
Four layers of data on the institutions that hold roughly CHF 1.3 trillion in Swiss occupational pension assets.
Top 100 pension funds, ranked by AUM
Autonomous employer schemes, collective and joint foundations, and public sector funds — ranked, sized, and identified by type. Not a list of registered entities: a list of the hundred that can write a meaningful ticket.
Consultant mapping
Which investment consultant advises which scheme. In the Swiss institutional channel the consultant frequently determines whether a manager appears on a shortlist at all, so knowing the relationship before the first call changes who you approach and in what order. This is the layer that no commercial database provides.
Allocation intelligence
What each segment allocates to and through which vehicle — private markets, real assets, insurance-linked strategies, foreign currency credit — and the constraints that come up in every first meeting: currency hedging cost, regulatory investment limits, minimum fund size.
Named decision-makers
The CIO, head of investments or fund selector who decides. Not a general enquiries address, and not a job title without a name attached.
Why this data exists nowhere else
Every foreign manager entering Switzerland starts by buying a database. Most conclude within two quarters that it was worth less than it cost. The reasons are structural.
- Switzerland is small enough to be ignored by global vendors. International databases cover it thinly, with stale contacts and generic entries, because the effort of maintaining a market of eight million people does not justify the licence revenue.
- Consultant relationships are never published. No registry records which consultant advises which scheme. That information comes from being in the market and talking to both sides over years.
- Many of the relevant institutions are deliberately invisible. Single family offices in particular have no website and no marketing-facing contact. A database sells you the ones that do — which are frequently the ones already saturated with approaches.
- Job mobility destroys lists. A contact file decays fast. Ours is maintained continuously as part of daily coverage, not refreshed annually by a research team.
- The four regions are treated as one. Vendors rarely distinguish Romandie from Deutschschweiz from Ticino, and the allocators in each behave differently enough that the distinction matters.
We built the map because we needed it to do our own work. It is a by-product of running distribution mandates, which is why it stays current.
The wider coverage behind the Map
The Swiss Investor Map is the pension fund extract of a larger map covering every Swiss investor segment.
| Segment | Estimated AUM | Institutions |
|---|---|---|
| Private banks | CHF 2.8–3.1T | ~70 |
| Pension funds | CHF 1.3T | 1 000+ |
| Family offices | CHF 1.0T | 64 |
| Insurers & cantonal banks | CHF 900B+ | 60+ |
| EAMs & IFAs | CHF 887B | 1 431 FINMA-licensed |
Investment consultants and retail banks complete the eight segments, across Geneva and Lake Geneva, Zurich, Basel and Ticino. Roughly CHF 7 trillion in total. Each segment is covered in detail on its own page — pension funds, family offices — and the wholesale channel under third party marketing.
Who uses it
The Map is used by people who own a Swiss number and have to explain it.
Heads of Investor Relations
Typically arriving with a board expectation for Switzerland and no way to size the opportunity honestly. The Map turns "Switzerland is a priority" into a defensible target list with a realistic timeline attached.
Heads of Capital Formation
Deciding where the next fundraise travels. The relevant question is rarely whether Swiss capital exists, but how many of the hundred largest schemes can actually invest in this vintage, at this ticket size, in this vehicle — and which consultants have to be covered first.
Heads of Sales and Distribution
Building or defending a European coverage plan. The Map shows where Swiss demand sits by segment and region, which makes the choice between hiring locally and outsourcing a numbers conversation rather than an instinct.
Professional use only. The Map is shared with asset managers, GPs and institutional investors, not with data vendors or competing distributors.
